Education.

2006-2011

PhD

Department of Geography
The University of Sheffield

I received my PhD degree of Social and Cultural geography in 2011, the Department of Geography, The University of Sheffield, UK. The main topic of the dissertation is abou modernity in Taiwan. With two different cases, I argue that modernity in Taiwan is not only related to modernisation and westernisation, but a series processes of hybridisation. Within he processes of hybridisation, local and traditional characteristics are intertwined with new elements, and transformed into new image of Taiwan.

The most contributive discussion of this dissertation is about 'ghostly modernity'. The chapter shows us how so-called traditional element, ghost, still reforms modern space, and influences on people's practices in their everyday life.

2001-2003

Master
Department of Geography

National Taiwan University

The master degree was received in 2003. The topic is to research how 'luxury house' constructs urban image. Luxury houses in Xinyi Planning District, Taipei City, Taiwan, are the cases in this research. In this dissertation, I argue commercials and advertisements did reflect the lifestyle in this Planning District, but the lifestyle is also reshaped by these advertisements. Also, 'who' are the maker of the urban image must be discussed. Key architects, construction companies and marketing companies form several blocs to manipulate the image of this city. In other words, as researchers, we do not only care about the processes of constructing urban image, but also have to pay more attentions on powers behind the processes of manipulating.

Research interests.

Dr. Lin's research interests are focusing on Social and cultural geographies, including ghosts and dark tourism, transnational migrants and materials, and human-animal relations. These subjects have been seen as 'others', and by rethinking and focusing on these othersied subjects, I attempt to understand and explore the history and our society in alternative ways.

Current research topics.

'Place is not only concrete material but also space fulling of powers, social functions and cultural meanings'. Thus, as a human geographer, Dr. Lin's research interests are always associated with the cultural, social and political aspects of 'place'. By discovering the reasons why 'ghosts' return, she attempts to explore the social functions and cultural meanings of the 're-enchantment' in modern society. 'We have never been modern'. Not only exploring the cultural and social meanings of 'ghosts' or 'enchanted subjects', she also draws on a combination of gender studies and material studies to explore the cultural politics in Transnationality and mobility. Foreign spouse and globalization of 'bubble tea' are the research projects in the last few years. Her current projects focus on human-animal relations in urban environment, such as case studies of cat cafes. She attempts to elaborate physical space where people and animal encounter to each other, as well as the changing human-animal relations emerging within these 'contact zones'.

Supervision.

Several main topics are related to my supervision.

  • Fan cultures
  • Material culture studies
  • Gender issues
  • Human-nonhuman relationship

Most supervised issues are about cultural material or phenomenon. Such as lifestyle magazines, paper-tape cultures in Taiwan, coffee cultures in Indonesia, and the social and political construction of indigenous cultures in Taiwan. Some students are also interested in gender issues, such as relations between women and climate change in Vietnam, transnational spouses in Taiwan, and home-birth practices in Taiwan.
Students who are interested in these issues are always welcomed. you can write your academic work either in Mandarine or in English. And as Dr Lin's supervised student, you will be required to participate any domestic or  international academic conference before your final defense; so that you not only get advanced academic experiences, but also can hear more suggestions from other audiences. Welcome, and enjoy the academic journey together.

Social Geographies

'Social Geographies' is one of the major modules in the department. The students are encouraged to think 'differences' of different groups of people in our society. Different people with various social, economic and cultural backgrounds will emerge diverse thinking and lifestyle in our everyday lives. Thus, by hosting this module, I would like to bring students to recognise the 'diversity' and 'differences' of our society.

Culture, Society and Nature

Optional module welcoming students from different disciplines. Different from the perspective of traditional physical geography, this module emphasises the interactions among human society, culture and environment, such as how 'human beings' and 'nature' collide, conflict with each other, compromise and find a way for each other to survive.

Necro Geographies

Optional module in this department. 'Spectre' has played an important role in human society, even in the so-called modern society. We can recognise 'ghost' in the increasingly prosperous texts and endless urban legends, and strengthen its influences in social, cultural and economic aspects.  To understand the importance and influence of 'modern ghost', the module aims to

  • Understand the significance of ghosts in different cultures and eras;

  • Understand how contemporary society is manipulated on ghost issues;

  • Understand the modernization and commercialization of 'ghost' and its potential in tourism or cultural industries.

Key issues in cultural geographies

This module has been taught in English for international students, as well as in Mandarin for local students. This module is to elaborate the topics from cultural geographies to ‘new’ cultural geography, particularly on the ways that feminism and post-colonial studies have shaped this discipline. The course will also move the attentions to explore more-than-human and more-than-textual understandings of the world, including coverage of themes of nature-culture, ‘new materialism’, and non-representational theory.

The main topic and themed issue of the module will be verified every year according to students' interests and academic background.  In fall 2024, the keywords applied in this module are 'landscape', 'place', 'mobility', 'governance', and 'food'.
